The housing crisis is hitting women. Hard. Historically there have been far more homeless men than women, but our stats indicate that this ratio is changing; in the previous quarter we had more female guests than ever before. In fact, over the last 5 years the number of men who have come to us has risen by 50%, but the number of women has tripled. Why? It's all part of a larger national trend. It's because women earn less, so pay more (proportionally) in rent. It's because domestic violence services are being cut. It's because the bedroom tax hits women harder, since women are more likely to have caring responsibilities after a divorce or separation. It's because homeless women often have multiple, complex needs.
