Wycombe Homeless Connection (WHC) is an award-winning registered charity serving around 500 homeless or vulnerably housed adults each year, focusing on those who do not qualify for council assistance. It is a community project of Wycombe churches, but serves anyone who comes for help, and does not promote religion. We believe that every individual has worth and should have a fresh start, no matter what their situation.

High Wycombe

Starting salary: £19,000-22,000 pa depending on experience

  • 37.5 hours per week, office-based with some travel around local area
  • Involves regular evening working January to March and occasional evening working year round

We are looking for a dedicated, conscientious and collaborative person to help us fight homelessness.

Every working day, our team challenges unfair evictions and provides advice, support, advocacy and resettlement. Between January and March, WHC staff and volunteers run a rolling emergency night shelter in church premises.

The job-holder will focus on helping clients find accommodation in more challenging cases. During January to March, this responsibility will concentrate on night shelter guests and involve regular evening working.

Handling challenging resettlement cases will typically involve:

  • Ensuring clients receive assistance from statutory bodies where appropriate
  • Helping clients to develop personal budgets to identify affordable accommodation
  • Assisting clients to prepare for and attend accommodation interviews and where appropriate to appeal against rejection

During January to March some flexible working will be required. For example this may include four shifts from 2pm-10pm on Mondays to Thursdays in alternate weeks. The role will involve:

  • Briefing the volunteer shelter team before the evening shift and supervising admissions
  • Providing shelter guests with focused support during the evening, or encouraging them to attend our support centre the following day

The successful candidate will be highly organised with excellent interpersonal, communication and computer skills. He or she will be used to working with external agencies and have at least one year’s experience of providing face-to-face services to individuals in areas such as community based work, social care, education or, ideally, in the homelessness sector. The ability to travel around the High Wycombe area, sometimes at night, is essential.

WHC is committed to the training and professional development of its staff. WHC is a Christian charity, and due to the nature of the role and organisation there is an Occupational Requirement in line with the Equality Act 2010 for the post holder to be a committed Christian.  An enhanced check by the Disclosure and Barring Service will be needed.
